Saturday June 18th- Fourth day of the Fling

The day began as all the others had, gathered under the trees in the grove.    Once everyone was seated, Mr.H. introduced our debate for the morning.  He told us, “Resolved: Theseus’ ship was the same ship despite the material changes it endured.  Please come prepared to argue one side or the other.”  It was then time to divide into our groups or “sides”.  After determining which side we were to argue, we had some time to form our collective arguments.  Zach O’Brien argued for the pro side and Jensen Near, for the con side.  They each had ten minutes to present their arguments.  Once each side was done, we had a little more time to form our rebuttals.  Jesse Newman spoke for the pro side and Autumn Hinrichs spoke for the con side.  They each had 5 minutes.  As soon as the rebuttals were done, the cross examination started.  This lasted until it was time for lunch, without Mr. H declaring a winner.  Many people stood and took questions for their side, answering to the best of their abilities, while others questioned those arguments to the best of their abilities.

During lunch, the guys played more Ultimate Frisbee, and the girls talked and walked the grounds some more.  Some of the guys however, began to set up for the recital that was to follow lunch.  When our lunch time was over, we all gathered in front of the Hall to listen and watch the recital which was about to begin.  The sun was very hot, and shade was in small supply, as we listened.  Many students like Emilie McDonald, Nicole LaSalle, Katie Aymin, Brett Criss, Adria Hinrichs, Emily Bell, Sarah Aymin, Chelsea Nygaard, Jesse Newman, Nathanael Kampen, Daniel Parker, Elizabeth Aymin, Christine Poirier, Zach Lucia, Autumn Hinrichs, Jonathon Aymin, Zach O’Brien, Lauren Lucia, Michael Taylor, Rachelle Kampen, Francis Pedraza, Jensen Near, and Julia Jackson performed wonderful pieces of music, poems and speeches.

After an afternoon break for dinner, and maybe a few gatherings, it was time to reunite to watch some of the students perform scenes from C.S. Lewis’s, The Great Divorce.  The wonderful actors who graced us with their talents were, Megan Vader, Jensen Near, Francis Pedraza, Stephen Jackson, Jonathon Aymin, Lauren Lucia, Zach Lucia, Kylee Danielson, Daniel Parker, Mr. Dean Nygaard, and Chelsea Nygaard.  All of the actors were under the direction of Amanda Helland.  Each person portrayed their character with understanding and feeling.  It caused all those in attendance to think about Lewis’ message, which came from the mind and heart of one of the most notable Christian apologists and writers of the twentieth century.  God was at work.

Then, all too soon, it was time for good-byes.  Mr. and Mrs. H. thanked us for coming.  In thinking about this Fling, they expressed some trepidation due to the house construction, but as God worked through His people in ETS, the time became much more enjoyable.  We all heartily concurred.  We then all joined in the taking of many pictures, signing things, and sharing hugs.  Some of us would see each other on the morrow, at the Old Globe, but for others, this was really “goodbye.”  The Fling of 2005 was mostly concluded, as we went home to houses or hotels with our Swiss Army pocket knives in our sacks.
