Friday June 17- Third day of the “fling”

Friday came with the much-looked-forward-to ball.  However, before the ball could be held, there were a few other things which needed to be done.  Sports were played in Felicita Park all morning.    Of course the games had to end at some point because everyone needed to get ready.  Mr.H told us that he would be taking portraits of the families from 4pm-6pm, and as the families arrived for their portraits, everyone greeted one another and took some pictures of their own.

When the pictures were done, it was time to for the ball.  We started with introductions of those families who were in attendance, as we all stood in family groups in a circle.  When this was done, it was time for the Letter to the Young Gentlemen and the Letter to the Young Ladies to be lively read aloud.  As we listened and heard about “something nasty in the woodshed” a few chuckles were shared through the crowd.  When the letter reading was done, it was time for the dancing!

As usual, we started with the Grand March.  As we all followed Mr. and Mrs. H around the driveway of Mr. H’s parents’ home, we walked to the beat of the music and talked with the people who passed us.  Following the Grand March, it was time for the Virginia Reel.  We all lined up in an appropriate row and did our right hand and left hand swings.  I do believe we enjoyed ourselves immensely.  The Gay Gordon, a waltz, the Patty-Cake Polka, St. Andrew’s Cross, the Spanish Waltz and another regular waltz wrapped up the evening.  When all the dancing (which seemed to be over too soon) was completed, the singing began.  We sang the songs which we had practiced, among them; Beautiful Savior, Dona Nobis Pacem, and the Doxology.

After the singing and dancing, some of us still weren’t ready to call it a night.  We took more pictures with our friends, lingered over delightful conversations, and then it was off to Denny’s for more food and conversation till midnight or so.  This was the end to an all-to-short, but very delightful evening.
